Value of contract: £4 million
The McArdle Group was contracted to reprofile the hardstandings and lawns between the new grandstand and racetrack at Royal Ascot Racecourse. The contract also involved the redevelopment of the Silver Ring Enclosure to the east of the grandstand.
The works were time critical and had to be completed for the key annual event in the racing calendar at Royal Ascot.
- Removal of the lawns and hardstanding in front of the Grandstand
- Removal of the existing concrete hardstanding (4,000m2) and recycling for reuse within the project
- Crushing site won materials for reuse (existing stockpile of material on site, left over from Grandstand development, was screened to volume reduce, minimising off-site disposal)
- Layering and reprofiling the existing ground infront of the grandstand – 10,000m2
- Replacement of all drainage – 2,000m
- Relay new services and ductwork – 3,000m
- Removal of existing lawn and replacing services (footpath in the foreground retained temporarily for ‘winter working’ access)
- Removal and reprofiling of existing hardstanding, lawns and services (Grandstand Contractor segregated from Civils Works by way of Heras Fencing)
- Construct precast curved concrete edgings to the grandstand lawns
- Construct new pavement consisting resin bound gravel surface over tarmac in front of the grandstand – 4,500m2 (designed to withstand high point loading from high heels in hot weather)
- Resin Bound surfacing over tarmac to eliminate concrete works and meet programme deadlines
- Reconstruct lawns consisting 40mm turf over Locksand and Kingsley sand – 6,500m2
- Design and construct reinforced concrete access stairs, disabled platforms and crowd control barriers complete with one-piece handrails, nosings and bonded gravel finishes.
- Stabilisation of fill materials to mitigate effects of winter working.
- Installation of new irrigation system and fire main system – 800m
- Design and construct new car parks and access roads – 10,000m2
- Landscaping and turfing of the new Silver Ring area – 40,000m2
The project was successfully completed on time for the Royal Ascot race meeting.
