McArdle awarded contract to remove and dispose of 50,000 cu metres of Blue Clay from the Baggage Handling Tunnel between Terminal 5C and Terminal 3 at London Heathrow Airport.

As part of a scheme to construct a Baggage Handling Tunnel between Terminal 5C and Terminal 3, Ferrovial awarded McArdle a contract to remove and dispose of approximately 50,000 cu metres of blue clay arising from the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM).  The launch chamber for the TBM and excavation for an interface building were completed in advance of the tunnel project and works are underway to excavate for a second interface building.

McArdle won the work by demonstrating our ability to meet specific time and security requirements on such a sensitive project.  Our fleet of 50 tipper lorries, labour and plant resources all complied with the stringent security and access restrictions applied by the BAA for 'airside' working.  The contract, operating 24 hours a day 7 days a week, was completed in six months.

Critical aspects of the project were dealing with limited space to stockpile material and the management of Tips and lorries to accomodate the stringent programme working airside within the Airport's strict security procedures and safety requirements involved detailed planning and cooperation between all parties involved.
