A421 Improvements

Client: Balfour Beatty
Value of contract: £335,000

Balfour Beatty employed the expert services of the McArdle Group’s First Geotechnics team to install deep drainage wells in an area of cut along the new A421 dual carriageway, as part of the road widening project between M1 Junction 13 and Bedford.

The wells are being installed in order to deal with groundwater and are designed as part of a complex pumping system in order to dewater the cut area as part of the permanent works.

The wells are 300mm in diameter and are backfilled using a filter medium comprising sand and perforated drain pipe.
